Terror, tourism, and meetings

The horrific terrorist bombings in Madrid could have far-reaching consequences for our business, though this article on hospitalitynet.org says the acts shouldn’t scare away travelers to Spain because, unlike the 2002 Bali attack and similar attacks in Kenya and Tunisia, the terrorists this time were targeting the Spanish, not foreign visitors.

"It's still early to assess the consequences, but we do not think they will be so damaging," said the WTO Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli [in the article] after the closure of the International Tourism Fair (ITB) in Berlin, which finished on 16 March. "It was an attack against Spanish democracy and the people living in Madrid, not against the Spanish tourism industry or foreign tourists" he stressed.

But will it impact upcoming meetings in Spain? A planner I know who has an upcoming incentive to Barcelona says not so far, but they’re keeping a close eye on the situation.
